Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs

Funding Cycle

Generally, the Council maintains a similar cycle of application and grant determination each year, in its core funding programs, as follows:

  • February:  Grant program guidelines and applications forms distribution.
  • February - April:  Application preparation assistance by MCACA to potential applicants through individual, group and public meetings.
  • March:  MCACA Grant Assistance Workshops held throughout the state.
  • May:  Grant application submission deadline.
  • June - August:  Public peer panel application review meetings convened in Lansing.
  • September:  Council determination of grant awards at a public meeting.
  • October - November:  Grant award contracting.

Detailed guidelines and an application form are available for each of the Council's funding programs. Organizations, interested in seeking funding from the Council, are urged to carefully review the guidelines and application form, and to consult with MCACA staff prior to submitting an application. All Council programs require that the applicant supply a level of matching funds (cash and inkind). In addition to stated program goals, the Council gives priority consideration to projects which serve multiple counties. The Council does not support the general operations of organizations or provide direct support to individuals. Refer to the specific guidelines and application form for each of the Council's grant programs.

Grant applications are reviewed, based upon established and published criteria, by qualified professionals recruited from throughout the state of Michigan and the United States. MCACA staff convene the peer panel review meetings and provide technical assistance. Only the Council, 15 members appointed by the Governor, are authorized to make funding determinations.

Funded projects and programs must be accessible to the entire community regardless of race, ethnic background, age, disability, sex, occupation, or economic condition, and should include and recognize the special needs of populations such as the elderly, disabled, geographically isolated or institutionalized. Funded applicants must meet contract requirements and submit final reports.
